IntroductionHave you ever noticed how much our rainfall varies? Some years it seems like it rains every day and other years we have a drought. You might think when it rains in metro Atlanta that we don’t need to save water. But, unfortunately we don’t have an endless supply of water. Our water resources are limited. Do you know why? We rely on streams, rivers and lakes for more than 99% of our water needs. We can’t get much water from the ground because underneath our soil is a layer of thick granite! Did you know that our local water utilities withdraw about 600 million gallons of water per day? Two Olympic-sized pools hold about 1 million gallons of water. That means our water withdrawals would fill 1,200 Olympic-sized pools each day! It’s important we understand where our water comes from and how we use it, so poke around our website. Knowledge, drink it up! |
